THE SIMPLE ACT OF KINDNESS THAT DEGRADES & DEMEANS, PT 2:
A MESSAGE FOR GEN Z

Gen Z, listen up please! “Adulting “ is not something you do; it is something you are! Period, full stop. As an adult you—just like everyone who has lived before you—are assuming greater responsibility and independence. You are standing on your own. You are in charge.
Therefore, don’t be fooled by the tempting promises of “free tuition, free buses, free health care, free rent, free groceries, or any other free stuff.” It’s seductive I know. The allure of getting something for nothing, of taking it easy on yourself, of avoiding challenges. Regrettably for you though, if you fall for those temptations, is that they are predicated on the assumption you can’t do it for yourself, that you can only remain a perpetual adolescent. That you are not capable and they then are superior to you, and need to assume control of your life.
And most important of all, born out by history is this: False gains lead to real loss. The loss is in your self-esteem, self-confidence, and sense of self-worth. Remember the wise words of journalist Harris Faulkner’s mom: “The people who can and will feed you are the same people who can will starve you.” Think about that. If you are dependent on someone else for the basics of life, that person has control over your life, and they can force you to submit to anything they want.
Don’t surrender to their promises of free stuff that will in fact trap you. Even just the offer demeans and degrades your ability and worth. Just stand up. Be an adult. Be responsible and independent.
Then, do what adults do. And learn the lessons of history that through the 20th century as a philosophy of greed known as Communism arose, it came up out of the persuasion of a population that they were entitled to something someone else had. They offered free stuff, equally divided. The end result of accepting that, and the so-called generosity of those who espoused those theories, was the murder of countries’ leading families, the murder of their children, the theft of all wealth, and ultimately the murder of at least 35 million people.
Newsflash: those murdered were not primarily the wealthy. There weren’t anywhere near enough of those people. Those murdered were just like you. Ordinary people who wanted to live independently, and to take responsibility for their own actions and the outcomes they produced.
Let’s drop the “adulting” cop out, and all just be “adults.” What do you say, my Gen Z friends? I believe in you and am counting on you to spot the con, and to reject the con.
